MUSIC JUST BLAZE Director of Music & Culture | Hip Hop Producer Just Blaze is a legendary hip hop producer who has been a household name in the music industry for the past 20 years. He’s worked on classic albums such as Jay-Z’s “The Blueprint” and “The Black Album,” Drake’s “Take Care,” Kendrick Lamar’s “Good Kid, M.A.A.D City” and Beyonce’s “Lemonade”. FILM/TV DEMANE DAVIS Television Director | Producer | Filmmaker DeMane Davis is a Television Director, Executive Producer and Filmmaker who has an overall creative deal with Warner Brothers Television Group and is currently EP/Producing Director on the second season of the TV series Brilliant Minds, starring Zachary Quinto. DeMane’s TV directing career began when Ava DuVernay invited her to direct on Queen Sugar. Since then she has directed and produced Found, starring Shanola Hampton; Naomi; the Emmy nominated Netflix limited series Self Made: Inspired by the Life of Madam CJ Walker; and Clarice. DeMane has helmed episodes of For The People, You, How to Get Away with Murder and Station 19. She has also directed over seventy commercials, including the 2023 Super Bowl spot for PETA starring Edie Falco, selected as Best Celebrity Commercial by Entertainment Weekly. Both of the indie features DeMane wrote and directed premiered In Dramatic Competition at the Sundance Film Festival and internationally at Edinburgh. LIFT starred Kerry Washington in her first leading role and received two Spirit Award nominations. Beginning his music career as a DJ in Washington D.C. in the mid-90s, Guru went on to become what the Wall Street Journal dubbed “the most influential man in hip-hop.” While he is most known for his work with Jay-Z – with whom he won a Grammy for Best Urban Contemporary Album for Everything is Love in 2019 – Guru has been a guiding force in the careers of the industry’s top recording artists. Over a decades’ long career Guru has made records with household names including Beyoncé, Rihanna, Ludacris, Bone Thugs-N-Harmony, Ghostface Killah, Method Man, T.I., Mariah Carey and more. In 2015, Young Guru assumed the role of the Director of Operations at 9th Wonder’s record label It’s a Wonderful World Music Group. In 2022, Guru announced his new role as the Director of the Music Technology, Entrepreneurship, & Production program at the Roc Nation School of Music, Sports & Entertainment at Long Island University. Please adhere to the following guidelines and rules Mentors should be engaged, encouraging, empowering. Mentors are expected to share expertise, wisdom, guidance, and constructive criticism to help their mentees develop and advance their careers. Mentees should be humble, disciplined, grateful. Mentees are expected to respect mentor’s time and do their best to follow their advice. The mentor/mentee relationship should be based in respect, trust, communication. This is a strictly professional relationship. Mentees should not discuss personal issues as mentors are not their therapists. Mentors are not expected to advocate in any way on behalf of their mentee e.g. make introductions, write recommendation letters help secure jobs, etc. If they choose to do so, it is at their sole discretion, not at the request of the mentee. Mentees can discuss projects, but must not pitch them to their mentors. If mentees asks their mentors to engage outside of a call e.g. listen/watch/read a sample, that is considered part of the monthly hour. Mentees should prepare questions for each session to maximize the time. Mentees should schedule the meetings and send calendar invites. Mentees understand their mentors may not reach the target 12 hours in the year due to unforeseen circumstances, but will try to make up the time, pending scheduling. Meetings should be virtual, unless the mentor suggests otherwise. If a mentor doesn’t hear from their mentee after two months, we will assume the mentee is no longer interested or able to participate. How to apply for Unlock Her Potential - review the questions and prepare your answers for the application. HOW TO APPLY GUIDELINES FOR APPLICATIONS In order to qualify for the program, you must be a woman* of color, 18 years or older, residing in the US (including Puerto Rico) for the duration of the program in 2026, and have an active LinkedIn profile. You may only apply for ONE MENTOR. If you submit more than one application, we will only accept the last one. There is a non-refundable $75 fee which you can purchase here . This donation helps offset the cost of processing applications and makes a meaningful difference in sustaining the program. As always, please feel free to email us with any questions at support@unlockherpotential.com . Review the questions below and prepare your answers for the application. *This includes cis, trans, non-binary, femmes, gender non-conforming, gender-expansive, & gender-fluid people. PREPARE Up QUESTIONS We strongly encourage you to take time to prepare your answers as they constitute the most critical part of the application. This will allow you to give more time and thought to this portion of the application. We recommend you keep a copy of your answers as we will not send them to you and in the unlikely event that something goes wrong with your submission. 1 At this stage in your career, what are your short-term and/or long-term professional goals? (750 characters or less) 2 Why is this mentor a good fit for you and vice versa? (750 characters or less) 3 List 3-5 topics and or questions you would cover with your mentor. (750 characters or less) TIPS FOR SUCCESSFUL APPLICATIONS Once you have chosen your mentor, take the time to research them. This will be apparent in the answer to the question "Why this mentor is most suitable for you". Prepare your application early so that you do not miss the submission deadline. This is a highly competitive program, so we recommend you inject your personality into your responses so that you stand out. Mentors consider interpersonal dynamics in addition to professional alignment. FAQ FAQ Can I apply if I have previously applied and did not get a mentor? Yes, of course! Can I apply if I have been an UP mentee in the past? Yes. Can I apply for more than one mentor? No. If you apply to more than one mentor, we will only accept the last submission. What if I make a mistake and accidentally submit early? Email support@unlockherpotential.com. Will I receive confirma tion of my application? If you do not receive a confirmation email within an hour, please email support@unlockherpotential.com . When will I hear if I have been chosen as a mentee? Everyone who applied will be notified mid-December 2024 whether or not they were selected. Will you provide me with a copy of my answers? No. In case something goes wrong in the application process, we highly recommend you keep a copy of your answers for your records. If I don't get chosen, will I still get an email? Yes. May I contact the mentor to whom I'm applying directly? No. If you are chosen, we will put you in direct contact with your mentor. If you are not chosen, we discourage you from contacting the mentors directly. Will I be provided with the reasons why I wasn't chosen? Unfortunately, no. Does Founder Sophia Chang review the applications and make matches? No. Sophia only reviews her own UPlicants. The mentors review their UPlicants and make their own choices. What if I have to travel abroad in during my program year? If you anticipate being out of the country for more than 3 months, you should note it in your application. Can I apply to the program if I am a white woman? No. But we welcome you to be a member of the broader UP community by signing up for our newsletter . Can I apply for the program if I do not live in the US but am a US citizen? No. You must reside in the US (including Puerto Rico) during your program year. Do I need to be 18 years old to apply? Jennifer Garrison, PhD, is a passionate advocate for women’s health and is pioneering a new movement to advance science focused on female reproductive aging. She is Co-Founder and Director of the Global Consortium for Reproductive Longevity & Equality (GCRLE) and an Assistant Professor at the Buck Institute for Research on Aging. She also holds appointments in the Department of Cellular and Molecular Pharmacology at UCSF and the Leonard Davis School of Gerontology at USC. Her research lab studies the role of inter-tissue communication in systemic aging, and how changes in the complex interactions between the ovary and brain during middle-age. Dr. Garrison received her Bachelor of Arts degree in Molecular Cell Biology from UC Berkeley then completed her PhD at UCSF in Chemistry and Chemical Biology where she was a National Science Foundation Fellow and an ARCS Scholar, then was a Helen Hay Whitney Foundation Postdoctoral Fellow at the Rockefeller University. She was named an Alfred P. Sloan Foundation Neuroscience Research Fellow and an Allen Institute for Brain Science Next Generation Leader and is the recipient of a Pathway to Independence Award and a Maximizing Investigators’ Research Award (MIRA) for Early Stage Investigators from the National Institutes of Health, a Glenn Medical Foundation Award for Research in Biological Mechanisms of Aging, a Junior Faculty Award from the American Federation of Aging Research, and a Healthy Longevity Catalyst Award from the National Academy of Medicine. She has played an active role in the aging field, as a member of the Board of Directors for the American Aging Association (AGE), a reviewer for the American Federation of Aging Research (AFAR), and as Associate Director of the Buck-USC Biology of Aging PhD program. As a respected music executive and trusted partner, Cristina Chavez has catalyzed the success and evolution of various GRAMMY® Award-winning multiplatinum producers and songwriters, ranging from Needlz and Bongo to Drew “Chiller” Gavin. Guiding careers as VP, A&R at UMPG, she consistently empowers talent to flourish and thrive at the highest level by leading with confidence and clarity. “I’m always transparent with my clients, first and foremost,” she exclaims. “They definitely know what’s on my mind. I’m very dependable as well. If I say I’m going to do something, I always get it done—and I make sure it happens in a positive way.” Growing up in The Bay Area, she immediately gravitated towards music during her childhood. Studying favorite artists, she obsessed over Toni Braxton’s voice and Babyface’s lyricism. While attending California State University Chico, she also split her time between internships at 106 KMEL and BET, grinding towards an eventual career in music. She turned the internship at BET into her first formal job as Talent Coordinator at 106 & Park in New York. She powered BET’s influential Music Matters brand, booking the likes of Kendrick Lamar, H.E.R., J. Cole, Big Sean, Miguel, Jazmine Sullivan, and more for gigs, appearances, and interviews at gestational phases of their respective careers. Not to mention, she oversaw the Music Matters presence at SXSW, A3C, and MegaFest, working with superstars such as Pharrell, Meek Mill, and T.I. 2016 saw her accept an executive position at ASCAP where she orchestrated initiatives with Women Behind The Music and She Is The Music, hosted panels, and secured talent a la Tierra Whack, Rico Nasty and many more for high-profile activations. In 2020, she joined the team at Hallwood Media as Senior Vice President of A&R and Management at Hallwood Media. Under her watch, Chiller wrote The Game’s internet-breaking 2022 epic “Eazy” [feat. Kanye West], while she also shepherded and ignited projects for Needlz [Cardi B, Drake, Bruno Mars] and Dimitri McDowell [Wiz Khalifa, Ty Dolla $ign]. Independently, she notably manages Bongo whose robust credits include Jazmine Sullivan’s “Girl Like Me” [feat. H.E.R.], Big Sean’s “Stay Down,” Cordae’s “Bad Idea” [feat. Chance the Rapper], G Herbo’s “Man Now,” Ty Dolla $ign’s “Ex” [feat. YG], and many more. At the same time, she sets an example for the next generation through her diligence and commitment. “I want to let young executives, especially girls, know you achieve every dream you have, if you put your mind to it,” she states. “It really is my life. I’m trying to contribute to the culture of music in some capacity.
